MW4 DMZ Operator MIA: Recovery and Consequences
Understand what MIA means for an MW4 DMZ operator and check recovery choices, retained progress and lost equipment.
When an Operator is eliminated and not extracted, they become Missing in Action. That Operator cannot deploy until you recover them at the FOB’s Active Duty station or dismiss them and recruit a replacement. Earned XP and selected Traits remain; the equipment they carried is lost. The recovery cost is paid in DMZ Cash and rises with the Operator’s invested Trait Points.
Scope: Launch MIA scope, checked 23 October 2026. No exact Cash formula or universal recovery amount was published in the reviewed material.

What MIA means
MIA is the persistent consequence of a failed deployment. It is not an account ban or a full progression wipe. The individual Operator is taken out of the Active Duty rotation until the player spends the recovery cost or replaces them.
The system gives the mode a harsher stake than a normal respawn without deleting every earned benefit. That balance is the reason the recovery choice matters.
What you keep and what you lose
| Element | Outcome |
|---|---|
| Earned XP | Retained |
| Selected Traits | Retained after recovery |
| Carried gear and backpack contents | Lost or at risk through the failed deployment |
| Operator availability | Unavailable until recovered or dismissed |
| Trait investment | Remains with the Operator and affects recovery cost |
How to recover the Operator
Recovery returns the same Operator with their selected Traits, but not the equipment they lost. The loadout guide explains how to rebuild, and the Cash guide covers where the payment comes from.
- Return to the FOB and open Active Duty.
- Select the MIA Operator’s profile.
- Check the DMZ Cash cost shown for that Operator.
- Pay the cost if the build is worth preserving.
- Re-equip the recovered Operator before deploying again.
Why the recovery cost changes
The official FOB guide says the cost is determined by the Operator’s Trait Points. A heavily developed Operator is therefore a larger financial commitment to rescue.
The reviewed sources do not state every multiplier or cap. If the displayed price is higher than expected, check the Operator’s invested points rather than assuming the game has changed the rule.
Recover or dismiss?
Dismissing the MIA Operator removes that persistent build and opens a replacement path. It is the cheaper choice for an Operator with little progress, but it discards the Trait choices accumulated on that character.
If every Operator is MIA, the reviewed material does not document a complete emergency flow. The Free Loadout remains available for a deployable character, but this page does not promise how a fully empty Active Duty roster is resolved.
The all-Operators-MIA edge case remains a precise source gap; it is not filled with a guessed recipe.
Common questions
Do you lose Trait Points when an Operator goes MIA?
The reviewed sources say selected Traits are retained after recovery. The equipment they carried is the main material loss.
What is the exact MIA recovery price?
No universal amount is documented. The official FOB guide says the cost is determined by the Operator’s invested Trait Points.
