MW4 DMZ Onboarding: First Run and Replay Options
Understand the MW4 DMZ onboarding flow and check which parts can be revisited without assuming that a replay or reset feature exists.
MW4 does not label onboarding as a separate tutorial mode in the reviewed material. The practical first-login path is the FOB: assign an Operator to Active Duty, review the Stations, deploy with a free loadout if needed, and use Story Missions as the tutorial-shaped objectives. Story Missions are described as built for replayability, but a dedicated onboarding reset is not established.
Scope: Launch onboarding scope, checked 23 October 2026. The page describes the supported first-run path, not a private tutorial instance.

The first things the game asks you to do
The first task is to choose an Operator for Active Duty. You begin with two slots; a third can unlock through DMZ progression, and Vault Edition owners start with an additional slot.
That Operator stays attached to the slot until dismissed. The assignment matters because backpack, loadout and Trait progress belong to the individual Operator, not a single shared character.
- Enter the FOB and open Active Duty.
- Assign an Operator to one of the available slots.
- Check Orders, the Stash and the available Stations before deploying.
- Use the Free Loadout toggle if you have nothing to risk.
- Choose Story Missions for the most guided first objectives.
Story Missions as the learning path
The launch guide describes Story Missions as designed to help new players learn the ropes. They provide specific objectives, introduce points of interest and reward equipment recipes, Fire Support, Cash and other items.
They are still part of a live mode rather than a guaranteed private training session. The official overview says Story Missions unfold inside a live DMZ server, while one early review describes a mission segment without enemy players. The sources do not fully reconcile that point, so the safe expectation is a narrative objective in a live combat environment, not a promise of isolation.
Returning to the FOB after a run
After extraction, the FOB becomes the place to sort the Stash, review Orders and decide which Station is worth unlocking next. The Boss Board unlocks after the second completed DMZ Order, and the Gunsmith unlocks at DMZ Player Level 10.
The first purchase that IGN recommends is a Bank Upgrade at $20,000, but that is an editorial priority rather than an official mandatory order. Check your own cash and inventory before copying it.
Can you replay onboarding or a Story Mission?
The official overview says Story Missions are built with replayability in mind and push the narrative forward through new discoveries. That supports replaying mission content in the broad sense; it does not prove that a menu option called “Replay onboarding” exists.
The FOB is always available to revisit between deployments. For an exact mission replay flag or tutorial reset, check the Mission Tracker and the current in-game menu. The reviewed sources do not establish a general reset that replays the entire onboarding sequence.
Onboarding is an editorial name for the first-login path. It is not presented as an official menu label.
Common questions
Do you start with one Operator or two?
You begin with two Active Duty Operator slots. A third can unlock through DMZ Player Levels; Vault Edition owners begin with a third slot.
Is there a separate DMZ tutorial mode?
The reviewed sources describe first-login steps and tutorial-shaped Story Missions, not a separately named tutorial mode. A dedicated onboarding reset was not confirmed.
