Is MW4 DMZ Free? Purchase Requirements and Editions
Compare MW4 DMZ access requirements, supported editions and platform costs before deciding what to buy.
No. MW4 DMZ is included with the paid Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 release, not offered as a free standalone mode. You can install the DMZ files without the whole game to save space, but you still need to own MW4. Regional prices and storefront availability vary.
Scope: Launch scope, checked 23 October 2026. The only price shown in the reviewed store data is a Hong Kong Steam price, which is not a global quote.
What you need to own
The reviewed coverage agrees on the basic access rule: buying MW4 is required. A separate DMZ download changes the install size, not the entitlement.
That separates this release from the 2022 DMZ beta that appeared inside free Warzone. It also means a subscription alone does not replace the game purchase unless the platform listing explicitly says otherwise.
Standard game versus Vault Edition
Both the standard game and Vault Edition provide the game, so DMZ access is not locked behind the Vault upgrade. The Vault Edition adds cosmetic and progression extras, including the DMZ Deployment Bonus.
The official Steam description lists the Hostile Alliance and Special Forces Operator packs, five Signature Weapons, one season of BlackCell, the Deployment Bonus, an Operator skin, a camo pack and a weapon blueprint. Those extras should be judged separately from whether DMZ itself is playable.
| Edition | DMZ access | Main distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Standard game | Included | Core game without the Vault bonus package |
| Vault Edition | Included | Adds Operator packs, weapons, BlackCell and DMZ bonus content |
Can you download only DMZ?
Yes, a DMZ-only install is reported as an option for saving storage, but it does not turn the mode into a free product. The platform still checks the MW4 entitlement.
If the download appears smaller than the advertised full-game size, that does not establish a free trial. The PC requirements page lists the launch storage and hardware baseline for the game.
Price and regional conditions
The Steam appdetails response checked for this launch showed HK$568.00 in the Hong Kong store. That is a dated, regional PC listing, not a current worldwide price and not a console quote.
Check the product page in your own currency before buying. Editions, platform storefronts and regional tax treatment can change the number without changing the access rule.
No universal price is claimed. The price check date is 23 October 2026.
Common questions
Is DMZ part of a free Warzone download?
The reviewed launch material says MW4 must be purchased. The separate DMZ install option saves space but does not remove the game entitlement.
Does the Vault Edition unlock a different DMZ mode?
No separate mode is described. Vault adds bonus content, while the standard game already includes DMZ access.
